Jacques Pourcel and Laurent Pourcel, who owns a Michelin three star restaurant have opened their second restaurant in Shanghai. T-sens is located on a unique site, just above a retaining wall facing the Su-Zeu River. It is a steel structure and is completely covered with reinforced glass; its amazing 360 degree view and good food makes the building a must-go restaurant for every celebrity in the city.

Romantic Crystal Palace
Even though the crystal palace makes a direct connection to a time almost 150 years ago when a steel structure began to play role in space design history. It is nevertheless an emblem still signifying elegance and modernity. Designer Gustaf!|s effort intended to bring back a reminiscence of that past as well as open up a dreamland for Shanghai residents to admire.

We find everything in this building has been melted. It is a physical object built of steel and glass but has been dissembled by light and shadows. Since the building was deliberately erased and left empty to be filled, Gustaf relied on furniture to fill in the gaps and at the same time he borrowed a view from outside.

Furniture arrangement and furniture itself are not the only elements that fulfill needs for sitting or other utilitarian functions. It is essential to give the space life. It also defines the interior orientation system and defines the boundaries. There is a central path in its plan and each side has chairs lined up in a double line. Another two lines extend to the either side while the chairs are different in type and texture from those of the first and second lines. The final section of the layout shows a district bordered by chairs to form an intimate zone with better privacy.

To cool the totally transparent skin and temper its summer heat, Gustaf put all the cooling vents along the glass skin. As the air pumps out from the floor, it carries heated air upward which is then sucked out from the ceiling ventilation system. White colored automatic blinds can be lowered to eliminate heat when it is necessary.

A charming emblem
In order to retain the old memory of the Crystal Palace, Gustaf transformed a classical motif to the steel structure. The surface of the steel girders, beams and columns can be read as many interesting symbols taken from classical architecture decoration. Columns supporting the building are painted silver and the chandeliers and their charming lighting deliver a sense of a fairytale romance. White chairs and a purple reception table draw a picture that only exists in story and dream world.

We also see tremendous effort in the use of mirror and reflective material such as stainless steel panels. Vision in this restaurant is in no way fixed; reflective images extend sight and allow one!|s vision to linger on anything that people can see. This amazing space has now everyone talking in the city that is regarded for its good food but Shanghai now also has an amazing experience in space.
